Corps to hold public meeting for proposed Cranberry Bend Project

Published June 13, 2014

KANSAS CITY, Mo.— The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Kansas City District will hold an open house public meeting for the proposed project at Cranberry Bend on Tuesday, July 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Waverly City Hall, 111 East Kelling Ave., Waverly, Mo.

The Corps will provide information on the background and proposed project. They will also solicit questions and input from the public for use in completion of the final Project Implementation Report with Integrated Environmental Assessment.

Cranberry Bend, a unit of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Big Muddy National Fish and Wildlife Refuge, is located in northwestern Saline County and northeastern Lafayette County, just north of Grand Pass, Mo. The proposed project at Cranberry Bend is part of the Missouri River Recovery Program. In partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, who manages Cranberry Bend as part of the Big Muddy Fish and Wildlife Refuge, the Corps proposes construction of a side-channel on the project site to benefit the federally endangered pallid sturgeon. This project would result in approximately 12 acres of shallow water habitat at completion of construction and ultimately provide approximately 41 acres of shallow water habitat through natural processes to create habitat for pallid sturgeon.

In addition to the public meeting, the Corps is soliciting public comments on the project during a 30-day review period that opened June 13, 2014 and will close on July 12, 2014. These documents are available on the Corps’ website at: http://www.nwk.usace.army.mil/Media/PublicNotices.aspx.
