Kanopolis Lake is U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operated reservoir located on the Smoky Hill River in southeastern Ellsworth County, Kansas. Congress used the Flood Control Act of 1938 to authorize the construction of Kanopolis Lake. USACE began work on the reservoir in June 1940. Work was put on hold with the outbreak of the Second World War. Construction was resumed in 1948 and completed the same year. Kanopolis Lake occupies 3,406 acres with a total capacity of 49,474 acre feet of water, and has a total catchment area in excess of 2,300 square miles. The authorized purposes for the dam are flood risk reduction, water quality, water supply, fish and wildlife conservation and recreation. Kanopolis Lake is located about 20 miles southeast of Kanopolis, Kansas and about 35 miles southwest of Salina, Kansas.
