February runoff higher, 2015 Missouri River forecast still slightly below normal

Omaha, Neb. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) Missouri River Basin Water Management Division reports runoff in the Missouri River Basin above Sioux City, Iowa was 2 million acre feet (MAF) during February, 186 percent of normal. The increased runoff was caused by above normal temperatures in the upper Missouri Basin that limited river ice build-up, and melted both plains and low elevation mountain snows. However, the 2015 runoff forecast in the same reach is 24.6 MAF, 97 percent of normal, and the March runoff forecast is about 1 MAF less than in February.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Missouri River Recovery Implementation Committee (MRRIC) will hold its 28th meeting February 23-26 in Kansas City, Mo. Public attendance is encouraged, and an opportunity is provided during each daily session for the public to address the Committee and the lead agencies, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service), regarding the Missouri River Recovery Program (MRRP).

Corps reduces releases from Missouri River dams due to lower runoff

Omaha, Neb. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) Missouri River Basin Water Management Division is reducing releases from the four lower Missouri River dams because drier conditions in October have reduced runoff into the reservoir system, resulting in faster evacuation of stored flood water. Releases were increased earlier this fall following heavy rains in the upper Missouri River Basin. The 2014 calendar year runoff forecast is 34.7 million acre feet (MAF), 138 percent of normal, which is down 0.8 MAF from one month ago. Average annual runoff is 25.2 MAF.

Corps maintains high releases to reduce future flood risk

Omaha, Neb. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) Missouri River Basin Water Management Division is maintaining above normal releases at the four lower dams on the Missouri River. As expected, September runoff above Sioux City, Iowa, remained well above normal, totaling 1.8 million acre feet (MAF), 157 percent of normal. The 2014 runoff forecast is 35.5 MAF, 141 percent of normal, down slightly from one month ago. Average annual runoff is 25.2 MAF.
