Kansas City District inspects BIL funded repairs to Missouri River navigation channel

With navigation season starting earlier this month, the Kansas City District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers inspected some of the repair work being done on the Missouri River to restore the navigation channel to its pre-2019 flood condition near Atchison, Kansas, on April 5, 2023. The contracts for repairs to the navigation channel have been funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, or BIL.

USACE attends Navigator’s Meeting hosted by Coalition to Protect the Missouri River

The Coalition to Protect the Missouri River (CPMR) held its annual Navigator’s Meeting in Jefferson City, Missouri, on Feb. 23, 2023. The Kansas City District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was in attendance and several district employees presented during the meeting. The purpose of the annual Navigator’s Meeting is for local, state and federal partners to determine common goals for the upcoming navigation season, starting on April 1, 2023. The CPMR works to keep the Missouri River fully functional through education and advocacy around the state and the country. CMPR works closely with state and federal partners, to include USACE.

Missouri River navigation support actions by the Kansas City District

The Kansas City District received significant funds to make repairs to river training structures on the Missouri River damaged over the years culminating in the floods of 2019. The funds will allow USACE to repair structures of the Bank Stabilization and Navigation Project, known in short as the BSNP, that provide for the self-scouring ability of the Missouri River as well as structures that stabilize the channel of the Missouri River.

Mississippi River Commission and Corps of Engineers tour Missouri River

Leaders from The Mississippi River Commission along with leaders from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers toured the Missouri River Mar. 29 – Apr. 1. Lt. Gen. Scott A. Spellmon, chief of engineers and commanding general, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Brig. Gen. D. Peter Hemlinger, commander, Northwestern Division, Col. William Hannan Jr., commander, Kansas City District and Col. Mark Himes, commander, Omaha District, met with partners and stakeholders and visited sites along the river.

Progress continues on damaged Lower Missouri River Navigation Channel

The Kansas City District is currently performing multiple tasks to address priority areas of concern and the damages to river structures that have accumulated during the nearly three years of high water. The district is using all available resources to include a combination of contractors, including one for emergency dredging, and our in-house floating plant to repair flood damaged structures and improve channel conditions.
