Corps provides safety tips for Memorial Day weekend

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Water is one of the premier destinations for Memorial Day weekend and with that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District’s 18 lakes see a huge increase in visitors. We value the safety of our visitors and want each and every individual to have a safe and enjoyable experience this holiday weekend and encourage everyone to think about these five recreation safety tips this Memorial Day weekend:

Corps approves temporary modifications to lake water management plans

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Due to ongoing challenging conditions with wet soils and higher than normal river levels across the Missouri River Basin, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District is canceling plans to increase water levels in reservoirs for the spring as stated in the annual water level management plans.    This temporary modification will better position the Kansas City District's reservoirs to receive spring runoff, and manage for locally heavy rainfall following record lake levels across the district last year. Nine of 18 district reservoirs reached record pools in 2019. Flood control operations at Kansas City District Reservoirs and Bureau of Reclamation lakes prevented $131 million in damages in Kansas and $2.27 billion in damages in Missouri during the 2019 flood event. Life safety and flood control are primary factors in reservoir operations throughout the Missouri River Basin.

Pomona Lake closes camping at Adams Grove Park, boat ramp remains open

VASSAR, Kan. — The Kansas City District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is scheduled to make operational changes and closures to Adams Grove Park located at Pomona Lake due to underutilization. These changes are being made in an effort to improve park operating efficiencies, while still providing a quality recreational opportunity for the public.

Rathbun Lake to implement new reservation policy

CENTERVILLE, IA. --The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Rathbun Lake has announced a new reservation policy for the 2020 recreation season. Beginning May 1, 2020 all sites in Island View, Bridge View and Prairie Ridge Parks will be 100% reserveable. This will result in several changes for campers at Corps of Engineers managed parks at Rathbun Lake.

Corps contracting with Harris-Stowe State University to develop recruiting program

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Kansas City District and Harris-Stowe State University agreed August 23, 2019, to a $49,000 contract to develop a Contracting Professionals Recruiting Program which will include marketing materials for the Kansas City District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Contracting Division. HSSU is a Historically Black College/University (HBCU) in St. Louis, Mo.
