The Harry S. Truman Lake Visitor Center continues to remain open Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays through September 30, 2023, and there are no plans to close the visitor center. The visitor center also offers educational programs by appointment, including special events whenever feasible.

Although funding for visitor centers is strained nationally, local reallocation of funds is currently being used and will continue to be considered for future sustainable visitor center operations at the Kansas City District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, lake project.

At the current operating level, costs to run the center are approximately $100,000 per year, which includes staffing, janitorial, mowing, refuse, utilities and preventive maintenance. Major maintenance repairs such as window replacement, heating and cooling equipment or sewer failure are not included in this figure.

The district has reviewed project-wide office space utilization, including the possibility of relocating the project personnel to the visitor center facility in conjunction with the display area. Although no decision has been made, using a portion of the visitor center for office space would provide a dual benefit of reducing facility operation costs as well as the potential to provide more visitation availability to the public.

Based on this analysis and funding, leaders of the Kansas City District, plan to finalize facility utilization, complete preliminary design and update the cost estimate for construction in preparation for potential future funding approval.

Harry S. Truman Lake is currently undergoing a Master Plan revision, which ultimately determines how project land will be used. Operation of the visitor center is not determined as part of the Master Plan revision.

USACE appreciates public interest in the Harry S. Truman Visitor Center and encourages members of the public to consider volunteering or contacting the lake project for partnering opportunities.
