The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District has begun construction on a project placing a rock, also called riprap, overlay on portions of the upstream side of Harlan County Dam, near Republican City, Nebraska. This project will protect the dam from future wind and wave erosion.

During the 2019 flood, portions of the existing rock degraded due to the extended duration of high water and wave action. The construction will start on the south end of the dam and extend north along the lake shoreline of the dam.

The public access south turnaround will be closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, due to construction. Visitors can expect heavier than normal traffic in this area.

The riprap placement is projected to be completed by fall 2023.
