KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District, awarded a $33.3 million design-build contract to Michels Corporation of Brownsville, Wis. The Corps of Engineers looks forward to partnering with Michels Corporation for the design and construction to replace and, or modify three pump stations within the Argentine Levee Unit. Project design will begin in October 2019 and construction is anticipated to commence in the fall of 2020.
These pump stations were originally constructed between seventy and one hundred years ago. Improvements will be made to the Turner Pump Station (located next to the Turner Memorial Bridge), the Argentine Main Pump Station (located at 2200 Argentine Blvd., Kansas City, Kan.), and the Strong Avenue Pump Station (located near the South 18th Street Expy/Highway 69 bridge).
This is the first construction contract to be awarded as part of a much larger federal investment in the Kansas Citys Levees Program. The Program includes improvements to ~17 miles of existing levees and floodwalls along the Kansas River in Kansas City, Kan. and Kansas City, Mo. The project will improve the reliability and reduce the risk of flooding to homes and businesses located behind the levees within the Kansas City metropolitan area. The Corps of Engineers is responsible for the design, construction and delivery of the Kansas Citys Levees Program through a bi-state partnership with Kaw Valley Drainage District, the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kan., and the City of Kansas City, Mo.
