Contract awarded for construction at Jameson Island

Published July 9, 2013

KANSAS CITY, Mo.— The Kansas City District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a contract for construction at the Jameson Island Shallow Water Habitat Restoration Project near Arrow Rock, Mo., on July 9, to Western Contracting Corporation from Sioux City, Iowa.

The contract is for approximately $3.5 million.

Western Contracting Corporation will be constructing a side channel chute on the Missouri River to extend the existing project further downstream. The project will divert water from the existing side channel chute into a new 6,000-foot long chute and create a backwater at the existing chute outlet.

The Jameson Island Unit Shallow Water Habitat (SWH) Restoration Project is a component of the Corps’ overall Missouri River Recovery Program. The Corps is working cooperatively with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service – Big Muddy National Fish and Wildlife Refuge on their existing public land to mitigate a portion of the diverse aquatic habitat that was lost as a result of the construction of the Corps’ Bank Stabilization Navigation Project by restoring SWH through construction of a side channel chute and a backwater.
