Winter drawdown planned for Tuttle Creek Lake

Published Dec. 9, 2015

MANHATTAN, Kan.— The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Tuttle Creek Lake has scheduled the winter drawdown for Friday, December 11. This drawdown is in accordance with the lake’s annual water level management plan and in coordination with the Kansas Water Office.

The winter target level agreed to with the Kansas Water Office will be 1073.0 elevation, or one foot above the normally planned drawdown to 1072.0. This elevated drawdown level is primarily due to the recent dry conditions experienced in the basin. With low inflows into the lake and the required winter target flows downstream anticipated, the lake is expected to continue to slowly decline below the 1073.0 elevation without additional precipitation this winter.

The lake elevation on December 4 was 1076.16. The lake level will drop approximately three feet by December 21, and a slow decline after is expected. Peak releases during the drawdown period will range from 3,000 to 4,000 cubic feet per second.
