STOCKTON, Mo.— The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Stockton Lake Project anticipates that testing and operation of the new hydropower turbine will begin in the next couple of weeks. Work is currently underway inside the power plant to prepare for the testing tentatively planned to begin during the week of Sept. 29. While testing the unit water will be released through the dam, downstream into the Sac River.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is the largest producer of natural hydropower in the United States representing 24 percent of total U.S. hydropower capability. Hydropower is the largest renewable energy source which offsets greenhouse gas emissions.
In April 2010, a contract was awarded to Voith Hydro, Inc., to replace the turbine runner, rewind the generator, upgrade the governor system, and replace the excitation system.
The Southwestern Power Administration markets power in six states: Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas.
The Stockton Power Plant was placed into service in 1973. Rated at 45-MegaWatts, the plant provides $8.3 million average annual energy benefits. The new turbine is rated at 52-MegaWatts. The Stockton Power Plant provides power to more than 2,644,000 end-users throughout the state of Missouri.
