KANSAS CITY, Mo.,— Labor Day marks the end of summer for many lake visitors which also means boating and water-based recreation is coming to a close as well. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District manages 18 lakes that are popular boating destinations throughout Missouri, Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska. Regardless of your skill level or motivation for heading to the lake this weekend, the Corps of Engineers encourages you to have fun and stay safe. Please review a few boating safety tips to help ensure a safe return home.
1. Check your safety equipment before heading out to the lake and before launching your boat.
a. Are properly-fitting life jackets available for every person that will be on-board your vessel?
b. Do the lights and sound producing devices still operate?
c. Is the fire extinguisher still usable?
2. Filing a float plan can be as informal as notifying a friend or family member, but it is very important.
a. Where are you launching from?
b. When do you plan to return?
c. Who is on board?
3. Boat ramps are typically congested on the holiday weekends so visitors are reminded to exercise patience when launching, parking, and unloading.
a. Avoid peak launching times for your area.
b. If your favorite boat ramp is busy, look for a nearby ramp.
c. Be certain to check your safety equipment before preparing to launch.
4. Take a state boating education course to help ensure you have the proper skills for an enjoyable boating experience.
