TRUMAN LAKE: Corps to hold annual hunt for persons with disabilities

WARSAW, Mo.— The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Harry S. Truman Lake and The Masonic Lodge #653 will host the 23rd Annual Truman Lake Managed Deer Hunt for persons with physical disabilities Nov. 3 and 4 at Shawnee Bend and Berry Bend Parks.  

The hunt is limited to persons with non-ambulatory or semi-ambulatory disabilities, or those permanently confined to wheelchairs, walkers, canes and/or crutches. A total of 22 individuals will be selected for the managed deer hunt using a random drawing for those that meet the selection criteria.   

Those interested in applying for the deer hunt can pick up an application at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Harry S. Truman Project Office Monday through Friday between 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or by calling (660) 438-7317, ext. 3802. Applications should be returned to the Harry S. Truman Project Office or postmarked by Sept. 30.

In order to maintain a high level of safety, camping at Berry Bend Park will be limited to the C-loop of Berry Bend South beginning the evening of Friday, Nov.2, through Sunday, Nov.4.   

Equestrian campers will not be permitted to camp in Berry Bend Park during this timeframe.  Additionally, all Berry Bend horse trails, the Berry Bend Equestrian Campground and Loop A of Berry Bend South Campground will be closed.         

Public use in Shawnee Bend Park will also be limited during the weekend of Nov. 3. The Shawnee Bend Boat Ramp will be open for public use. However, no archery hunting will be allowed in Shawnee Bend Park during the special hunt. The Shawnee Bend Golf Course and Club House will also be closed on Saturday, Nov. 3 and Sunday, Nov. 4.  For additional information concerning the Truman Lake Managed Deer Hunt, contact Park Ranger Rusty Callister at (660) 438-7317, ext. 3802.
