KANSAS CITY, Mo.— The Kansas City District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has reached a milestone within the Bean Lake Levee Association and is scheduled to host an event on May 16 to recognize the achievement of restoring the levees to their 2011 pre-flood level of protection.
Media is invited to attend this event. The levees reduce the risk of flooding along the Missouri River to approximately $10.5 million in property value, several homes and businesses and about 15 miles of state highway.
The Bean Lake Levee Association in Platte County, Mo., covers the Bean Lake Levee and the Platte County Drainage District #1 Section 2 Levee. A contract was awarded to TJC Engineering, Inc. of Louisville, Ky., on Feb. 10 for nearly $933,000 to make the repairs.
The levee rehab projects are a cooperative effort between the local levee sponsors and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The sponsor plays a vital role for non-federal levee rehabilitation projects and is responsible for 20 percent of the construction cost, the right of way and the material necessary to reconstruct the levee. The Bean Lake Levee Association received Community Development Block Grant funding from the state of Missouri to cover their portion of the construction in the amount of $224.000.
The project is scheduled to be complete in June of this year. Only minor grading, seeding and drainage structures remain to be completed.
