Stockdale Park benefits from upgrades

Published March 21, 2012

MANHATTAN, Kan.— The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Tuttle Creek Lake announced several recent changes in the infrastructure at Stockdale Park, located in Mill Cove on the west side of the lake.

The main campground has been reconfigured to improve traffic flow and to permit the expansion of twelve campsites. Previously, these sites were small, unlevel, and incapable of accommodating newer recreational vehicles.

The redesigned sites will accommodate all types of camper trailers, with full water and electricity hookups, including 50-amp service. Ten sites feature back-in designs, while two sites are pull-though designs. One site is specifically designed to serve handicapped campers, in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

In addition, a modern ADA-compliant shower house has been erected, along with adjoining campsites for as many as two park hosts. The volunteer park host will perform day-to-day park care and maintenance, including mowing, cleaning, and park visitor assistance.

The former primitive camping area one mile west of the main campground is slated for closure due to frequency of flooding and high maintenance costs. Future plans call for the construction of a non-utility camping area in the main park area that will meet current recreation standards.

Campsites in Stockdale Park can be reserved through the National Recreation Reservation System by calling toll free (877) 444-6777, or online at www.recreation.gov. The daily camping fee is $18.00, payable from April 15 through October 31.
