MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Local, state and federal officials will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the completion of Phase I of the Manhattan levee project in Manhattan, Kansas, on Wednesday, October 9, 2024.
The project, which is a partnership between the City of Manhattan and the Kansas City District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, will provide crucial flood risk reduction for the city. Through construction upgrades, the Manhattan Levee System will have substantially enhanced reliability and structural integrity.
Construction of Phase I began in the fall of 2021 and was completed in September 2024. The total construction cost of the project, including a future Phase II, is $46.2 million, of which 65 percent was funded by USACE and 35 percent was funded by the City of Manhattan.
Construction of Phase II is tentatively scheduled to start in June 2026.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 9 will be an opportunity for partners, stakeholders, and the public to celebrate the completion of this important milestone in the project. Senator Jerry Moran will be in attendance, as well as officials from the City of Manhattan and the Kansas City District, USACE.
