KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is kicking off the weekend right by showing just how easy it is to wear a life jacket anywhere, anytime.

Today, Friday, May 20th, is recognized through the Safe Boating Campaign as Wear Your Life Jacket at Work Day. Whether you’re working in an office, on the water, at home or basically anywhere, help us participate in this global awareness effort encouraging recreators to make the most of their outdoor adventures by being responsible and returning home safely.

Grab your life jacket, put it on and wear it enjoying the day at work to be a beacon for water safety during this worldwide initiative.

You might stand out a little, but you will help show others that if it is easy enough to wear a life jacket while working, then it should be even easier to wear when on, in, or near the water.

Numerous serious accidents and fatalities could have been prevented simply by wearing a life jacket. Eighty-nine percent of the people that died in water-related accidents that occurred at USACE projects nationwide were not wearing a life jacket.

It only takes seconds to drown. It takes an average of 60 seconds for an adult to drown and just 20 seconds for a child to drown.

Did you know it takes an average of 10 minutes to put on a life jacket after entering the water and that is if you are a strong swimmer? Putting on a life jacket before entering the water takes only a few seconds.

Get on board and wear your life jacket to make a difference and save lives!
