Milford, Kan. — Local, state and federal officials gathered Saturday to rededicate the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Milford Lake Dam fifty years after its original dedication at East Rolling Hills Park. The ceremony commemorated the 50th anniversary of Milford filling to capacity.

Dignitaries gathered for the ceremony as a quintet from the 1st Infantry Division Band played for the crowd. The ceremony began with the U.S. National Anthem as the American and U.S. Army Corps flags were raised by the Junction City High School’s Junior ROTC cadets.

"Milford Lake is a true gem and jewel to the State of Kansas, people from all over the country know about Milford Lake. My father helped build the dam as he worked as a heavy equipment operator during its construction," said Kansas State Representative Lonnie Clark during his comments at the rededication ceremony.

The Kansas City Deputy District Commander, Lt. Col. Brent Legreid stated in his comments that the 50th anniversary is also a celebration of what an involved and cooperative stakeholder group can achieve.

The State of Kansas is a proud partner with the Army Corps of Engineers. The project has significantly helped with flooding over the years along the Republican River, said assistant agency secretary Linda Craighead of the Kansas Department of Wildlife Parks and Tourism.

During her remarks, Junction City Mayor Phyllis Fitzgerald said, "What a great day for the State of Kansas, the largest manmade lake in the state that helps to protect our great city. Here’s to another 50 years of flood protection and recreation."
