Smithville Lake high water and blue-green algae update

Published July 30, 2015

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The U.S Army Corps of Engineers Kansas City Districts reports that the blue-green algae bloom reported earlier this month has dissipated and the lake elevation has now fallen to only 3 feet above normal pool. The beaches are open and lake recreation has returned to normal conditions.

The blue-green algae watch notice has been removed and recent testing shows that the harmful toxic producing cyanobacteria  is  currently found in relatively low density and a small percentage of algae present. Recent tests resulted in very low to zero algae toxins detected.

The lake level is down and all park facilities are open although some repairs may still need to be made to beaches, trails, campsites and high water debris removed.
