Pomona Dam to undergo rip rap enhancement project

Kansas City District
Published Sept. 9, 2025

Pomona Dam will undergo a rip rap overlay project on its front slope that is anticipated to start around Sept. 15, 2025. This project is necessary to reinforce the dam’s protective layer and ensure its continued structural integrity.

The existing rip rap, placed over 60 years ago, has deteriorated due to natural weathering. This deterioration compromises the rip rap’s ability to protect the dam’s front slope from erosion and other potential damage. The project will involve placing new rip rap over the existing layer to restore the dam’s protective barrier.

The project is anticipated to involve numerous dump trucks delivering rock to the dam face daily, along with equipment used for placement. To facilitate the project, half of the existing beach parking lot will be fenced off and used by the contractor for equipment storage and a temporary office trailer.

The beach season will end on Sept. 15, 2025, so the gate will remain closed to the public, similar to past years. During the 2026 beach season, the Michigan Valley Beach will be closed to the public on weekdays until 4:30 p.m. The beach will remain open for public access during evenings, weekends and holidays.

The Kansas City District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and its contractors are committed to completing the project efficiently and safely. Visitors are urged to exercise caution around construction vehicles and equipment, and to stay clear of the designated work areas for their own safety. Please observe posted signage and follow directions from construction personnel.
