    A trip through geological time: Wilson Lake’s unique topography makes it a must-see destination

    Standing over 20 feet in the air, the red, striped sandstone formations tower over the surrounding landscape, casting long shadows into the water they sit next to. Where can these majestic rock formations be found? It’s not Utah or New Mexico, but Kansas. That’s right – Kansas. Known for its agriculture (cows outnumber people, after all) and its flat prairies, it might be surprising to learn there are areas of the state with large geological formations like those found in Utah, New Mexico and other areas of the American Southwest. Wilson Lake, located in central Kansas, is home to some of the most unique topography in the state.

    Wilson Lake park ranger provides extraordinary skillset

    Park rangers are valuable teammates of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District, as they are at the front lines working at our lake projects to ensure the public can utilize and enjoy the projects year-round. One park ranger who has spent the last 22 years of dedicated service with the Kansas City District is Matt Beckman.

    The Kansas City District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed several solar field projects that greatly contribute to the sustainability and energy efficiency initiatives at the Wilson Lake Project that help to protect, sustain, and improve the natural and man-made environment completed over the last two years.

Over the past fourteen years, one individual has stood out to the staff at several Kansas lake projects within the Kansas City District. This quiet, thoughtful, intellectual individual has spent numerous hours dedicating his service for the greater good and has made a lasting impression on our team.
