Charting the course: Completed mega project maps out lessons in partnership

Group projects are almost never easy. Getting all parties to agree on everything, all the time can be a challenging feat, if not downright impossible. Now imagine trying to complete a group project on a mega scale, while still delivering it on time, within budget and safely. Mega projects within the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are no small task, and certainly not for the faint of heart. As their name suggests, these are projects of an incredibly large scale – in budget, complexity or a combination of the two. Despite their challenging nature, the Kansas City District has become a leader in USACE with mega project success. In September 2025, the district celebrated the completion of one of its first military construction mega projects, setting the standard for future mega projects and leaving a lasting impact across the nation.

Operation renovation: Chinook hangar undergoes vital modernization efforts

Originally built in the 1940s as a U.S. Navy Reserve facility, the Aviation Support Facility Olathe located in New Century, Kansas, is currently home to Bravo and Delta Companies, 7/158th General Support Aviation Battalion, U.S. Army Reserve. Supporting U.S. military missions across the nation and around the world, the units provide critical maintenance to a fleet of CH-47 Chinook helicopters and consist of the pilots and crew members who execute the mission.

‘Someplace they can feel at home and happy’: Kansas City District completes design for new Fort Leavenworth child development center

One of the biggest challenges our nation’s servicemembers and their families face is moving from installation to installation across the country, sometimes across the world, every couple of years. To help reduce the stress and uncertainty that servicemembers and their families can experience during a permanent change of station, the Army uses standard designs when constructing facilities on their installations. This helps to instill a sense of familiarity across installations.

Enabling the warfighter: Fort Riley barracks renovations help to improve quality of life for soldiers

Fort Riley, a U.S. Army installation located in north central Kansas, is known for many things: storied home of “The Big Red One,” early duty station of the infamous Gen. Custer, former home to two Buffalo Soldier regiments and once home of the prestigious Cavalry School in the early 20th century, just to name a few. Drive around the installation and it doesn’t take long to feel transported back in time. When you reach what is known as “main post,” the buildings transition from the standard red brick and beige concrete seen on many military installations, to native limestone, which was used for constructing the installation in the 1800s. Fort Riley’s Main Post Historic District was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, and includes 294 buildings, structures and monuments.

Shaping the future of the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant

Lake City Army Ammunition Plant, located in Independence, Missouri, is the largest producer of small-arms munitions within the Department of Defense, turning out over a billion rounds of ammunition per year. This plant is a vital part of the past, present and future of the U.S. military. Production at the plant started in 1941, during World War II. Currently, it provides the majority of small-caliber ammunition for the U.S. military. It also performs ammunition development for the U.S. Army’s Next Generation Squad Weapons program. LCAAP is doing important work, and its partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District is a key part of this success.
