Corps discontinues camping at some Kanopolis parks

Published April 18, 2012

MARQUETTE, Kan.— The Kanopolis Project Office of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced its decision to discontinue allowance of overnight camping in the Boldt Bluff  and Yankee Run Point Lake Access areas.

As Operations and Maintenance budgets decline, the USACE has proactively evaluated their recreation program with a focus on increasing efficiencies while reducing costs. It is anticipated that discontinuing camping in these areas will generate significant savings through reduced maintenance needs such as custodial, refuse disposal and mowing services typically completed by a contract work force.

Located on the southwest shoreline of Kanopolis Reservoir, the Boldt Bluff and Yankee Run Point areas have historically provided lake access, day use and overnight camping opportunities at no visitor cost.

Implementation of this management change will be effective May 1, 2012. The areas will be posted “No Camping,” and amenities such as picnic tables, fire rings and toilet buildings are scheduled for removal.

The areas will remain open for visitor access including the single lane boat ramp located in the Yankee Run Point area. The USACE-managed Riverside and Venango Parks along with the Langley Point and Eastshore State Parks managed by the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism will remain open for overnight camping.

Questions may be directed to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Kanopolis Project Office at (785) 546-2294.
