The public is invited to attend a webinar July 19, 2023, from noon – 1:00 p.m. CST by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Kansas City and Omaha districts have completed the updates to the flow frequency data on the Lower Missouri River. The focus of the review is for partners in flood preparedness and response to learn more about the updates and how to use the new data.

The flow frequency data are posted at: https://www.nwk.usace.army.mil/Missions/Civil-Works/Civil-Works-Programs-And-Projects/Lower-Missouri-River-Basin/Flow-and-Stage-Frequency-Analysis/

Following the historic flooding events of 2011 and 2019, USACE determined that the available flow and stage frequency data being used for managing flood risk needed to be updated.

The Omaha and Kansas City Districts with coordination from Missouri River Basin Water Management and other USACE , state, and federal partners are working to update this critical data.

Updated flow and stage frequency estimates will lead to better flood risk management, flood preparedness, response and recovery in future Missouri River flood events. This is a multi-year effort occurring in two phases.

In the first phase of two phases, USACE conducted an analysis estimate of new flow frequencies at 10 gages along the lower river from Yankton, South Dakota to Hermann, Missouri. Flow frequency calculates the recurrence of peak flow rates at gages.

The second phase will use the flow frequency data to update the stage frequency. The stage frequency estimates the height of flood waters in the floodplain, on levees, infrastructure and properties. USACE estimates the completion of this second phase in approximately two years.

Both analyses incorporate additional years of data and state of the practice statistical analysis to assess the likelihood of flooding in the basin downstream of the Missouri River reservoir systems.

USACE continues to offer one-on-one meetings with any interested levee districts to discuss the flow frequency results and potential future impacts to individual levee systems. Regular updates also will be provided over the next two years of the stage frequency analysis.
