KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Media members and the public are invited to Harlan County Lake, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, part of the Kansas City District, which will host a ribbon cutting for the recently completed project to repair the mechanisms for multiple tainter gates which allow the Corps to release water from the lake. The event is Friday, May 11 at 11 a.m. at Harlan County Lake near Alma, Neb.

Col. Doug Guttormsen, commander of the Kansas City District, and other dignitaries will speak at the event hosted at a location with a view of the dam – the North Outlet Park.

The event culminates a process begun in 2010 when an inspection of the dam revealed issues with the mechanisms which open the tainter gates. The long-term $31 million project replaced and repaired those mechanisms. With the 18 tainter gates, nine sluiceways and irrigation line repairs, the purposes of flood risk reduction, water supply, irrigation and recreation are now fully restored.
