MANHATTAN, Kan.,— The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Tuttle Creek Lake will host a free Eagle Day program on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event will begin at the Manhattan Fire station located at Kimball and Denison avenues.
"This program has been provided free of charge for over 20 years with thanks to our many sponsors," said Angelia Lentz, Tuttle Creek park ranger. "Together, we truly strive to make this an enjoyable event for all."
The event will showcase bald eagles, their remarkable recovery and what makes them special to the nation and Tuttle Creek Lake and will include speakers from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Milford Nature Center, a presentation featuring live native birds of prey and an eagle watching tour around Tuttle Creek Lake.
Transportation will be provided for the tour. Visitors should dress for the weather as the tour includes short walks across unimproved terrain to reach viewing stations. A limited number of spotting scopes and binoculars will be provided, so visitors are encouraged to bring their own. No registration is required but space is limited to a first come, first served basis.
Bald eagles have made a remarkable comeback from a population low of an estimated 417 nesting pairs in 1967 to over 10,000 pairs today. Tuttle Creek is home to several nests and provides prime habitat for bald eagles and other birds of prey.
"Viewing opportunities at the lake are plentiful," said Lentz. "Join us for our Eagle Day program to learn more about these beautiful, majestic birds."
Sponsors of this event include the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, The Northern Flint Hills Audubon Society, Tuttle Creek Lake Association and the Milford Nature Center.
