HERMITAGE, Mo.— The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District has finalized the Pomme de Terre Lake Shoreline Management Plan.
"With input from local residents, we were able to hear their concerns and sought ways to incorporate their thoughts into our management plan," said Brian Wright, operations project manager for Pomme de Terre Lake. "In doing this, we strive to strike a balance between public and private shoreline use."
The Shoreline Management Plan for Pomme de Terre Lake establishes policy and guidelines for the protection and preservation of the desirable environmental characteristics of the shoreline. This plan is scheduled for review every five years. To collect input, a public workshop was held in July 2017 and comments were collected through Aug. 1, 2017. Major changes to content and zoning were addressed during this review process.
"This year we took several aspects into consideration, including the number of individuals to benefit from a possible rezoning and impact upon the natural shoreline. The outcome resulted in a decision to recommend denial of all three rezoning requests. One zoning request was for an expansion and two were for new boat dock zones," said Wright.
"The plan does implement a more flexible minimum design standard for docks," said Glen Locke, natural resource manager. "For example, the flexibility includes some variation in heights to the guardrails."
In addition to flexibility, the plan implements regulations and restrictions.
"To ensure we are compliant with federal regulations, certain actions may be restricted for grandfathered boat docks," said Wright. "We thank the community for attending our workshop in July to help review this five-year process. The final Shoreline Management Report can be found on our website or obtained at the Pomme de Terre project office.
