MANHATTAN, Kan. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District, has announced the award of two contracts at Tuttle Creek Lake in Riley County, Kansas. The first contract award is to Alltech Engineering Corp., Saint Paul, Minnesota on July 17, 2017 for the rehabilitation of Service Gates 3 and 4 in the amount of $1.34 million. The second contract award is to BCI Construction USA, Inc. Pace, Florida on July 28, 2017 for the rehabilitation of the stilling basin downstream of Tuttle Creek Dam, locally known as the tubes, in the amount of $7.62 million.

Service Gates 3 & 4 Rehabilitation Project: All routine water releases from Tuttle Creek Dam are conveyed through the control tower in the lake near the west end of the dam. This project will repair and rehabilitate two of the four gates used for routine releases, as well as paint embedded steel liners in the vicinity of the gates. The project limits are confined primarily to the control tower and stilling basin, with minimal traffic and access impacts to the public during construction. Construction activities of this project are expected to take 18-20 months.

Stilling Basin Rehabilitation Project: The water released from the service gates flows through the dam and into the Stilling Basin below Tuttle Creek Dam and on to the Big Blue River. The Stilling Basin work includes extensive concrete removal/replacement and excavations landward of the basin walls. The project will include the installation of additional anchoring to structurally strengthen the basin wall system and will address permanent repairs to the sink hole that developed in this area in the summer of 2015. This work is expected to take approximately 24 months to complete and is scheduled to begin in the late summer of 2017.

The entire basin area will be closed to all public use for the duration of the work once the contractor mobilizes for the project. Once construction starts, the west entrance to the Riverpond State Park will be closed. Also, visitors wishing to use Shelters #3 and #4 in Outlet Park this fall will access that area through the Riverpond State Park from the east for the remainder of the current recreation season. The eastern portion of Outlet Park, including Shelter #3 and #4 will be closed to public use starting November 1, 2017 and until the work is complete.

The USACE Kansas City District website will provide updated construction schedule information on the progress of these projects as it becomes available. http://www.nwk.usace.army.mil/Locations/District-Lakes/Tuttle-Creek-Lake/
