SYLVAN GROVE, Kan.— The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Wilson Lake will begin non-emergency repairs to two earthen slides located adjacent to the entrance road to Lucas Park and on the downstream slope of Wilson Dam. There is no imminent danger to the public.
These slides were discovered following nine inches of rain during the month of May. The saturated conditions are believed to have caused these slides. Wilson Lake project staff and geotechnical engineers from the Kansas City District Office are monitoring the earthen slides routinely. Funding and repair methods are being researched with an unknown time of repair.
The earthen slide on the downstream slope of Wilson Dam will be tarped to prevent further runoff and sliding.
The Lucas Park entrance road is closed for public safety. The park will remain open for camping and tourism. Traffic has been rerouted through a one-way road. Drivers are advised to follow the detour signs, reduce speeds and be cautious while entering and exiting this temporary roadway.
