UDPATE: Tuttle Creek and Milford lakes Water Control Manual public meeting rescheduled

The Kansas City District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has rescheduled the Tuttle Creek and Milford lakes Water Control Manual joint public meeting scheduled for December 1, 2025, due to inclement weather. The meetings for Clinton and Perry lakes and Waverly are still scheduled, and the public is invited to attend. These meetings will provide an opportunity to learn about the array of alternatives developed to date and offer valuable feedback on the update process.

These meetings will provide an opportunity to learn about the array of alternatives developed to date and offer valuable feedback on the update process. These meetings are designed to explain the current status of the analysis and gather input from the public to ensure the updated manuals reflect the needs and concerns of the communities surrounding these important water resources.

Temporary recreation area closures and service reductions begin May 15 across Kansas City District, USACE

The Kansas City District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will temporarily close or reduce services at recreation areas across Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa beginning May 15, 2025. USACE is currently managing seasonal staffing and resource limitations that affect its ability to safely open and maintain all recreation sites at normal levels of service. These temporary adjustments are being made at all 18 Kansas City District lakes to ensure visitor safety, protect environmental resources and sustain critical hydropower and dam operations.

Army Corps of Engineers waives fees and invites volunteers to participate in National Public Lands Day, Sept. 28

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced today that it will waive day use fees normally charged at boat launch ramps and swimming beaches at its recreation areas nationwide in recognition of National Public Lands Day (NPLD) on Saturday, Sept. 28. The waiver does not apply to camping and camping-related services, or fees for specialized facilities such as group picnic shelters. Other agencies and partners that manage recreation areas located on USACE lands are encouraged, but not required, to comply with this waiver of day use fees in the areas they manage.

Updated hunting regulations in effect at Kansas lakes

The Kansas City District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, along with the Kansas Water Office and Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism, has prepared the Draft Watershed Study Report for the Kansas River Reservoirs Flood and Sediment Study.

Drought conditions at Tuttle Creek Reservoir result in reduced target flows at De Soto and Topeka

Continued drought conditions in the Kansas River basin will result in reduced target flows at De Soto, Kansas, and Topeka, Kansas, starting November 1, 2023. The Kansas River at De Soto, Kansas, flows will be reduced from 1,000 cubic feet per second to 800 cubic feet per second, and the Kansas River at Topeka, Kansas, flows will be reduced from 750 cubic feet per second to 600 cubic feet per second. These flow targets are met to maintain water quality on the Kansas River.

Kansas City District waiving collection of day use fees for October & November

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District, announced today that it will waive the collection of fees at its day use recreation areas for the months of October and November. Fee collections were suspended earlier this year at boat ramps and swimming beaches when recreation areas were closed due to COVID-19 precautions. USACE plans to resume its day use fees in the spring of 2021.

Adjusted releases approved for Kansas River Basin reservoirs

This decision was made in consultation with the Missouri River Basin Water Management through a thorough impacts analysis that addresses the downstream impacts of increased release targets and upstream impacts of not evacuating all the stored flood waters in the reservoir projects.

The Kansas City District urges visitors to be prepared, understand the importance of water safety, to be alert and to expect the unexpected.
