Tuttle Creek Lake Announces Firewood Policy

Posted: 02 Nov 2009
MANHATTAN, Kans.. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Tuttle Creek Lake recently announced its firewood cutting program for the upcoming heating season.

Only dead wood on the ground may be cut for firewood on public land at Tuttle Creek Lake. This includes fallen trees and driftwood. No permit is needed to gather downed wood.

Firewood cutters are reminded that standing dead trees often provide valuable nesting habitat for wildlife, so standing timber on public property should never be cut down.

Vehicles must remain on designated roadways, so plan to haul wood to the road by hand, wheelbarrow, or other non-motorized means. All firewood gathered must be for personal use and not sold.

When using a chain saw, remember to use appropriate safety gear: leg chaps, hard hat, and eye and hearing protection. Know your limits, and never cut alone.

Fall Rise at Tuttle Creek Lake Gets Underway

Posted: 18 Sep 2009
Visitors to Tuttle Creek Lake will notice a higher lake level now than when they visited this summer. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) is holding back inflows to allow the lake to rise approximately four feet.

This annual fall rise is intended to benefit waterfowl by inundating shoreline vegetation. The near-steady pool levels this summer have allowed plenty of growth along the shoreline, so conditions are ideal for attracting migrating birds.

The Tuttle Creek Lake fluctuation plan is coordinated between the Kansas Water Office, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, and the Corps. This plan calls for allowing the lake to rise four feet through the month of September to inundate wetland habitat and attract migrating waterfowl, including teal, ducks, sandpipers, wading birds, and pelicans.

According to the plan, the lake is held at this level through the months of October and November, and then gradually lowered seven feet in December ... Full Story

Pfeil Creek Footbridge Closed

Posted: 18 Sep 2009
A recent periodic inspection of the footbridge across Pfeil Creek in Outlet Park at Tuttle Creek Lake revealed structural deficiencies, resulting in the closure of the bridge until further notice. Plans are underway to either repair or replace the footbridge.

This footbridge provided access to the Pfeil Creek shelter, a softball field, and a vault toilet. Visitors to Outlet Park may continue to use the other five picnic shelters, ball fields, and sanitary facilities.

Contact the Corps of Engineers at (785)539-8511 for more information.
