Elmore Log Cabin

Photo of Log Cabin

Visitors are welcome to tour the log cabin and smokehouse located within the Harry S. Truman Visitor Center Complex. The log cabin is a replica of a pre-civil war period 1840’s to 1850’s Missouri single pen cabin with a sleeping loft. Located near the cabin is douple pen barn and a smokehouse used for curing meat. Construction methods and materials were replicated as closely as possible to those used by early Missouri settlers. White Oak trees that had been killed by flooding were cut down and hand hewn to build the cabins. Steve Hanson volunteered to construct the cabin and utilized his vast knowledge of cabin construction, lifestyles of Osage Valley people. Phil Williams donated rock and constructed the rock fireplace. Volunteers and members of the Osage Valley Heritage Association also helped build the cabin.

The cabin was constructed to provide visitors an interpretive opportunity to learn about mid 1800’s Missouri people and how they lived. The construction of the cabin was made possible by a Cooperative Agreement between the Corps of Engineers and the Osage Valley Heritage Association. Future plans are to construct an outhouse, well, and a small barn to replicate an entire mid-1800’s Missouri farmstead.
