19th Annual Truman Managed Deer Hunt for Individuals with Physical Disabilities

WARSAW, Mo. -- The Shawnee Masonic Lodge No. 653, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers sponsored the 19th Annual Truman Managed Deer Hunt for individuals with physical disabilities on Nov. 7th and 8th at the Shawnee Bend and Berry Bend recreation areas at Harry S. Truman Lake.

The combined resources and partnership of the Shawnee Masonic Lodge #653, local non-profit organizations, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers make the event possible. Many local sponsors, guides, and volunteers worked long hours to make this an eventful managed deer hunt.

Hunters and volunteers alike were up at 4 a.m. both days to enjoy a hearty breakfast before heading to the woods. Drew Allen and his crew were up well before everyone else preparing food for breakfast and lunch.

Annual Truman Lake Managed Deer Hunt

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Harry S. Truman Lake and The Masonic Lodge #653 will host the 19th Annual Truman Lake Managed Deer Hunt for persons with physical disabilities Nov. 7 and 8 at Shawnee Bend and Berry Bend Parks.

The hunt is limited to persons with non-ambulatory or semi-ambulatory disabilities, or those permanently confined to wheelchairs, walkers, canes and/or crutches. A total of 22 individuals will be selected for the managed deer hunt using a random drawing for those that meet the selection criteria.

Those interested in applying for the deer hunt can pick up an application at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Harry S. Truman Project Office Monday through Friday between 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or by calling (660) 438-7317, ext. 3802. Applications should be returned to the Harry S. Truman Project Office, or postmarked by, Sept. 30.

Periodic Boundary Maintenance to Begin at the Harry S. Truman Project

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at the Harry S. Truman Project Office is advising area residents that boundary line maintenance work will soon begin in the Clinton/Henry County area.

One hundred miles of the Harry S. Truman Project Boundary will be treated starting in September with a completion date of March 31, 2010. Arrowhead Starr Company from Arkansas has been awarded the contract for this work.

Boundary line maintenance involves crews replacing damaged or missing boundary signs and posts and clearing brush and small trees from an area four feet wide on the public property side of the boundary line. Trees larger than 6" in diameter will not be removed but pruned of side limbs for a distance of up to 7 feet high on the trunk.

Current year work involves the boundary line along the Grand River arm in Henry County from the Clinton area to the Teal Bend area in Benton County. A second section of boundary work planned for St. Clair County w ... Full Story
